Oakley Surf on Fire at the Quiksilver/Roxy Pro

Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast

The Oakley surf team came out of the gates hot during the openings days of the Quiksilver/Roxy Pro – the first of 11 stops on the 2012 ASP World Championship Tour.

Jordy Smith sent a clear message that he is back and has his sights again set on the World Title. In Round 2 he scored an 8.33 and a 9.1 on his opening waves to advance over tour veteran Taylor Knox.

“I’m feeling better than ever this year,” said Jordy. “My rib is almost back to 100 percent. A month ago it was still hurting in the surf, but now it’s feeling good.”

WCT rookie, Kolohe Andino made some noise of his own, claiming his first heat win on tour over Brett Simpson – despite some serious rookie nerves.

“I’m stoked to win my first heat on tour,” said Kolohe. "I don’t think I was surfing too good though. I was kind of jittery out there with all my nerves.”

Following suit, 2011 ASP Rookie of the Year, Julian Wilson found his form in Round 3 posting the highest heat total of the day with an impressive 18.57 points to oust fellow Oakley teammate Adam Melling from the competition.

“I did want to make a statement,” said Wilson after the heat. “In my first two heats I wasn’t myself – it didn’t feel like it was coming together for me. Then in [Round 3] I felt a lot better, felt solid on my board and good to get some high scores.”

Arriving on the Gold Coast ten days early paid off in spades for Adriano De Souza, who sailed through his early round heats to advance into the Quarter Finals alongside Oakley teammate Jordy Smith.

“I tried to catch the best waves and sometimes luck is on your side,” said Andriano. “I’m stoked to skip Round 4 and move straight into the Quarter Finals.”

The men were not the only ones posting high scores however, 2011 Women’s World Tour Rookie of the Year, Tyler Wright defeated reigning ASP Women’s World Champion and defending event winner Carissa Moore. The heat was a re-match of last year’s Roxy Pro Final and Tyler proved that she was not willing to settle for runner-up again this year.

“I knew I had to do something big to beat her,” said Tyler. “She’s the ASP Women’s World Champ. I think she won three events last year so I knew it was going to be tough. I was lucky enough that I got the good waves. If she got them she would have smashed me too.”

The victory earned Tyler a spot in the Semi Finals where she’ll have to take down fellow Aussie Laura Enever to contend for the 2012 Roxy Pro title.

Best of luck to Adriano, Jordy and Tyler as they head into the business end of the first contest of the year!
