Belgian Tom Boonen Puts New Oakley RadarLocks In the Spotlight at Tour of Flanders

Cycling : 96th Tour of Flanders 2012

In front of a home crowd, Belgian Oakley cyclist Tom Boonen held off a duo of Italian riders to claim the 2012 Tour of Flanders victory. Boonen tied a record for total victories at the Belgian event, winning his third Tour of Flanders title. Following up on wins in 2005 and 2006, Boonen joined elite company all while wearing the soon to debut Oakley RadarLock sunglasses. This was the first cycling victory by any athlete wearing the highly anticipated performance glass.

Throughout the 255km, one day race, it was a three man lead pack consisting of Boonen and fellow Oakley cyclists, Italians Filippo Pozzato and Alessandro Ballan. Boonen was not confident going into the final section of the race with just the two Italians for company. In a hard fought battle to the finish he would ultimately claim the top spot, outlasting his doubts. Boonen made a break on the third climb, joined by Pozzato with 17km to go. Eventually Boonen had just a bit more left in the tank to sprint ahead to the finish for his eight win of the season and his third in the past ten days.

“The wind was my ally,” Boonen said. “It was very tough to cycle alone in the last 8 kilometers (with the two Italians). The victories record is the cherry on the cake, it only adds to my happiness, to have my name alongside names who have entered the history books in this race.”

Next up for Boonen is the Paris-Roubaix, a race that he has already won three times. Based on his recent success, Boonen is very confident going into the French race.

“I have won a fair few races this season and my confidence has returned. Paris-Roubaix? It would be fantastic to win it after having won the GP E3, Ghent Wevelgem and the Tour of Flanders. I am going to try. It is a race that suits me better than the Tour of Flanders.”

With that type of confidence, he can’t go wrong. Best wishes in the upcoming event and thanks to Tom for putting himself, Oakley and the new RadarLocks on the podium.
